Session Date: April 7, 2017
The PCs arrived at the Wizard of Wines Winery and are approached by Davian Martikok. Davian takes them into a clearing in a small copse to the north of the vinery. The PCs reveal that they are aware of the Martikov’s lycanthropic nature. Davian tells the PCs that evil druids from Yester Hill have taken over the winery and the PCs agree to rid the place of these invaders.
The party heads towards the winery. As it does so, needle blights emerge from the fog. A craggy figure, one of the evil druids, appears in the ruined roof of the winery and begins raining spells down upon the PCs. Oona watches from above and notes other druids emerging from the winery.
Some PCs rush forward to the winery while Blaze and Talia are cut off and swarmed. Eli hides among the vines, sniping at the blights. Solveig engages one of the berserkers guarding the druid on the top of the winery. Tyrexia ensorcels that druid as well as several of his allies
Eventually, Solveig breaks the gulthias staff destroying all of the blights at once. The party mops up the rest of the foes and searches the winery. The party finds treasure belonging to the Martikovs. Lor braves a cavern infested with brown mold to retrieve gloves of missile snaring. The party also finds another Blinsky toy.
Emerging from the winery, the PCs bring the good news to the Martikovs. At the same time, they explain diplomatically but forcefully that the party is a ⅔ owner of the winery. The Martikovs graciously accept this new development.
Davian informs the PCs that several gems were taken from the winery that are essential to its returning to full production. One gem was lost 10 years ago when Davian’s son, Urwin, was dallying with his betrothed. One gem was lost three weeks ago when Baba Lysaga sent her scarecrow servants to the winery. Baba Lysaga is an evil hag that resides in the ruins of Berez. One gem was lost five days ago when the druids of Yester Hill began their attack.
The party takes a much needed long rest.
Upon waking, the PCs learn of two new developments. A wereraven has returned from the Old Bonegrinder and says that Ireena is not safe there much longer as Strahd’s allies have assaulted the place several times. A greenish storm cloud is building to the south over Yester Hill and lightning flickers down with regularity.
Davian suggests that Ireena may be safe in a holy place and suggests the following: The church in the Village of Barovia; the church in Vallaki; and the abbey in Krezk. The PCs believe the church in the Village of Barovia has probably been corrupted by Father Donovach’s evil actions. Krezk has been locked for a year so Davian is not sure the status of this place. He has only delivered wine to the front gate every two weeks before the druids attacked.
The PCs send a message to Ireena, via animal messenger cast by Davian, instructing her to begin the journey overland to the Luna River where they will meet her.
The PCs then travel to Yester Hill with a force of wereravens and hundreds of ravens. Upon arriving at Yester Hill, the PCs note a ritual taking place. Druids and wild hillfolk dance around a wooden statue with Strahd, a greenish light glowing in the statute’s chest. Lightning flickers down and strikes the rocks surrounding the ritual. Four giant bats circle overhead, accompanied by Strahd on his nightmare mount.
As the PCs emerge, the druids finalize the ritual and a giant evil tree emerges from the statue. The wereravens and raven swarms take on Strahd and his allies while the PCs fight below. The druids on the hill are seriously weakened by fireballs from Talia while the Blaze, Lor and Solveig form a line to prevent the druids and the tree from attacking the casters.
The evil tree, the druids, and the mountain folk are killed, yet the wereravens and raven swarms fare poorly against Strahd. Tyrexia tells the wereravens to retreat. Strahd then flies to the ground and begins approaching the PCs, starting with a casting of slow.
Instead of attacking Strahd, the PCs turn their attacks to Beucephalus, Strahd’s nightmare mount. After Beucephalus takes significant damage during the party’s assault, Strahd flees the battlefield to save his precious mount.
While recovering from the fight, Solveig is called to a cairn, where he retrieves a powerful magic weapon—the Blood Spear of Kavan. The party also finds one of the gems in the ruins of the tree and returns it to Davian.
Davian and the others pledge their service to the PCs’ cause. After deducting for those that died fighting Strahd, the party has the following servants at their call: 4 wereravens, 2 raven swarms, and Davian Martikov (a wereraven who casts spells as a 7th level druid).
The party then heads overland towards the Luna River, where they meet with Ireena, one of the children, and two wereraven guardians. The wereraven explains that one of the children were killed by Strahd’s evil servant Rahadin.
As the group hurries north towards Vallaki, they hear the howls of wolves closing. The party hides on both sides of the trail to set an ambush. A dusk elf, who can only be Rahadin, approaches with four dire wolves.
Rahadin spots the party before they spring forward. While he nearly slays Talia, Rahadin and the wolves are brought down.
